Low Level Laser Therapy, commonly known  as Cold Laser Therapy , is a form of therapy which involves the application of low power light to injuries and lesions to help promote healing.  Low Level Laser Therapy will work on a cellular level to speed up tissue repair, decrease inflammation, increase range of motion, and ultimately helping to relieve pain (1).

How does Cold Laser Therapy Work?

The reason why Low Level Laser Therapy is referred to as Cold Laser Therapy is because the effects are photochemical (cold), not thermal.  In other words, because the laser works on a cellular level, it will not produce heat  like surgical lasers.  During the treatment an interaction between  cells and photons take place.  The "powerhouse" of the cells, known as mitochondria, absorb these photons from the laser and help the cells make ATP.  ATP is the energy source of the cells which helps to facilitate all of our body's functions including (1):

  • Faster wound healing

  • Anti-inflammatory actions

  • Increased vascular activity

  • increased metabolic activity

  • Rapid cell growth

The coherent light is delivered via specific pre-programmed pulsations to the specific areas of injury.  These pulsations interact with the cells to increase cell metabolism and communication rapidly.  According to a recent FDA study, Low Level Laser Therapy has also shown to help tissues such as muscle, skin, and nerve, heal 66% faster.

Low Level Laser Therapy has allowed our clinic to treat many conditions and injuries.  As more and more research is done, we are finding that the list of symptoms that LLLT treats is expanding.  Here is a list of conditions and symptoms we have treated in our office:

  • Acute Pain
